José Manuel is a Brooklyn based filmmaker from Chile. After working as a designer for 10 years he moved to NYC to advance his career in filmmaking. He worked on independent projects in various roles and was later admitted to the NYU Graduate Film program in 2018.
His work as a filmmaker has centered around the queer experience, memory, religion, and Latino identity; telling stories that are tinged with elements of magical realism that bring some light and hope into dramatic issues. His first narrative short-film, “Fervor”, premiered at the Palm Springs International Short Film Fest in 2021, and received the Grand Jury Prize at NewFest 2021 and a Special Mention of the Jury at SANFIC Santiago International Film Festival 2021.
He is currently in post-production of his second short-film, and writing a his first feature script, and a new short scheduled to shoot at the end of the year.
José Manuel is the recipient of a scholarship from the Chilean National Agency for Research and Development, two grants from the Chilean Ministry of Arts and Culture, and a grant from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
